Zones...

MTV World is going to be a large place, approx 100 acres, so to make it easy to navigate I intend to split it up into zones. My initial idea was to give them names such as Adrenelin Zone, Waterworld or Winter Wonderland.
After reading the brief I wanted to embody the spirit of MTV as a brand continuing to pioneer music and music culture, this gave me the idea of calling each zone by a genre of music.

Initial ideas were to call the zone that includes extreme sports the Rock/Heavy Metal Zone, a zone including things such as a relaxing spa the Chillout Zone, a zone including pimped out cars the Hip Hop Zone, zones including jet ski's and speed boats could be the Reggae zone and a possible adults only zone the Blues Zone.
To make it appear more like a 'World' the Reggae zone for example could look like Jamaica with Palm trees and beaches.

Other Genres of music:
Alternative
Blues
Chillout
Classical
Country
Dance
Disco
Electronic
Folk
Heavy Metal
Hip Hop/Rap
Indie
Jazz
Latin
Pop
R&B/Soul
Reggae
Rock

The Ultimate Experience...

I want MTV world to be the ultimate experience so i decided to look at some websites offering day experiences as gifts.

If I was to create an 'MTV World' it would have to be the ultimate experience for my target audience.
MTV's main target audience are aged 18 - 25 (this can even go up to 35 year olds) so I want to use 'cool' things related to youth culture as well as great experiences.

Skate Park (think Tony Hawk)

Car/ Motor Show:
Cruz.
Ferrari and Lamborghini Experience (in association with Farrari Lamborghini)
Off Road driving - Quad Bike Experience.
Simulators.

Right the first thing I need to think about is what this magical 'place' is going to be called, ideas follow:

MTV World
MTV Land
Land of MTV
Planet MTV
MTV Planet
MTV Universe

Tag Lines:

The ultimate Experience.
Experience our world.
Enter our world.
Out of this world.
...into a new reality.
MTV real reality.
Experience 25 years of MTV.
...for the young at heart.
A world for the young at heart.
Magical world of music.

I now need to consider how I should treat this concept.

I the best way to present this concept is to construct it by creating a series of maps. I am considering splitting MTV World (or whatever it may be called) into a number of zones and creating an illustrative map, a zonal map and a synopsis of each zone.

I think the best thing to look at before I start to think about this is to look at existing maps for places such as Disney world.

MTV World

The BIG idea...

Ok, after deciding that a roller disco would be a good idea I decided to step back and think things over. Yes it was a good idea and I still intended to use it in some way but I wanted things to be bigger... if MTV were to be an experience, it would have to be the biggest and best experience that young adults could have, and during my meeting we cracked it.

Disney world has got to be the best experience that you can have, although it aims to please the youngsters, the whole family are able to enjoy it. It's as if you are stepping into a different world!! I have been to Disney world in Florida myself and I must say, it was probably the best holiday I have ever been on. I would love to go again but feel that I now might have to wait until I have kids myself.

This therefore gave me the idea of creating something similar for MTV.
MTV is now the biggest youth media brand and I want to create a 'world' full of things relating to youth culure. This could include a range of experiences such as the Roller Disco and some other inital ideas I included earlier such as Car shows, Extreme sports etc.

Rolling on...

Now that I have my main concept for how MTV is going to morph, I must now decide how to exercute the brief to create and promote my concept.

Consider:
Target Audience - The young at heart who are always looking for a licence to create. Let’s face it, growin up is the best fun you can have – trying out who you want to be.
Tone of Voice - As a brand, MTV is a unique place and platform to celebrate what it is to be growing up, representing and empowering young people, revelling in the shock of the new and enjoying everything life has to offer, right here, right now. Responses should therefore be celebratory, audacious, shameless, smart and witty.

Existing events - Somerset House Ice Rink
London's original and most beautiful open-air ice rink opens every winter at Somerset House right in the heart of central London. This is always a very popular event and becomes fully booked very quickly.

Intention -
I intend to create some kind of strategy for my event (Event strategy)
I could also still create posters and flyers to promote the event and a possible TV ident.

The Event:
MTV Roll will be a worldwide event. MTV, is now the biggest youth media brand in the world broadcasting as 79 channels, across 167 countries in 23 languages.

MTV International: Australia, Africa, Brazil,Canada, China, France, Germany, Holland, India, Italy, Japan, Korea, Latin America, Nordic, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, South East Asia,Spain, UK, USA.

'MTV Roll on Tour' could be a worldwide tour that takes place in the countries mentioned above.

The Venue:
A roller disco should be quite easy to organise because all you need is an area that is big enough to roller skate. Venues could include large arena's, nightclubs, outdoor areas or just a large hall or basketball court.

Guests:

- Famouse DJ's playing a range of different music to cater for all tastes.
- Celebrity guests and appearances.
- Dance and skate choreographers:

Bill Butler, one time dubbed the “Godfather of Roller Disco,” and is the creator of the Jammin skate technique, which he was developing as early as the 1960s. This technique is a funky, captivating, attention-getting display of “R&B Skating” - but is only one example of the many styles and techniques R&B skaters have created over the decades.
'Jammin sessions' could be on offer to teach the Jammin skate technique.

Michael Johnson & Mahaujah Turner (skate choreographers on the movie 'Roll Bounce') are well trained after years of studying and skating with Bill Butler.

Drinks:
Could possibly have over 18 and under 18 events. Still undecided wether alchohol should be available as roller skating and drunk people may noy be the best mix and could become dangerous (but probably very funny!)

'Get your skates on!'

MTV Roll...

I decided to use MTV Roll as the name of the event. This is because you would'nt instantly know what it meant untill your read about it giving you a scence of curiosity. It's also a relevant name for something like a roller disco.

The logo shown above is not necessarily my final design.

Video...

Here is a storyboard for a quick ident using the short sequence of the roller skater I created previously.

Video Idea...

Here is a storyboard for an animated sequence of a guy on roller skates spinning around. I took some footage from the movie 'Rool bounce' and animated each frame to create a short sequence (only 1 second at the mo) in black and white. I intend to use colour in my final idea so this is more of an experimental piece.

MTV Roll!

If I am to continue with this brief I must decide what media I want my final submission to be. I am keen to create an animation or piece of motion graphics so I may create a Television advert or Ident. I might also produce a poster or range of posters promoting the event/ experiance.
I also need to consider how I am going to brand this new concept and what name it should take (if one at all).

Initial thoughts for its names or tag line:

MTV Roll
MTV Roller
MTV Skate
MTV RD (Roller Disco)
MTV: Lets Roll
MTV: Rock and Roll
MTV: Roll up, Roll up!!
MTV Flare
MTV Disco

Below are some quick ideas for a logo using the name MTV Roll:

The power of off...

With one finger applied to a TV off button you could save 20kg worth of carbon pollution in a single year. UK-wide that's nearly half a million tonnes of carbon. That's a poke in the eye for climate chaos, and all it takes is a finger. This is the power of off.

The average house in this country has 12 item on standby. Hunt them down, turn them off, and dont worry, they'll remember what time it is. You can come back when your finished.

I decided to grab a camera and go around the house taking pictures of things that might waste electricity and possibly cause carbon pollution!!

climate cool continued...

Abit of research...
What causes climate change?
Climate change or global warming is caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide (C02) and other polluting gases in our atmosphere. The gases trap heat by forming a blanket around the Earth – like the glass of a greenhouse. Once released the greenhouse gases stay in the atmosphere for many years. As they build up, the planet's temperature rises. Greenhouse gases are released by burning fossil fuels - coal, oil and gas - and by cutting down forests. Nearly all of the CO2 emitted by western industrialised countries come from burning coal, oil and gas for energy. Globally as well as in the UK, electricity generation is the biggest source of CO2 emissions, amounting to over a third.

But who causes it?
It's simple. We all do. At home, work and play.

Climate change will affect everyone on earth.

The effects predicted by climate change scientists include:
sea level rises, which will drown many coastal cities and small islands more extreme weather events like floods, droughts and hurricanes changes in rainfall patterns, altering the timing of seasons.

What can we do about climate change?

Electricity
Switch things such as the TV off and do not leave them on standby
Flying
And aviation is the fastest growing contributor to climate change. Please try to take at least one less flight a year
Driving
Try not to - and lose those love handles by cycling or walking. But if you do have to drive please switch to a car that's less gas guzzling or even a hybrid car.

MTV Morphs...

I am still slightly undecided on which Brief to continue with but I have now narrowed it down to two... MTV and Climate Cool.

MTV Morphs continued:
I think this will be an interesting brief to explore. I have already thought of a number of ideas for what MTV might be if it wasn’t just a broadcaster, and I think my best and most interesting idea was for MTV to become a roller disco.

Roller Disco's:
A roller disco is a discothèque where all the dancers wear roller skates. The music played is modern and danceable, historically disco but in modern times including almost any form of dance music or pop music. Roller discos are also popular among older children and young teenagers, especially for parties. As in other discos, special effects such as dry ice and flashing traffic lights are often used.

The concept originated in the 1970s when the disco craze was at its height, peaking around 1980 and inspiring several roller-disco magazines. As of 2006, the craze has largely discontinued and I want to bring it back in the form of MTV Roll.

Style...

70's and 80's all the way!!! but this doesn't have to be the case all the time. Ok we can throw in some cheesy seventies music and costumes occasionally but if you can dance to it, anything can be used. Cheery seventies hits, funky house music to Hip-Hop and RnB would cater for everyones taste.
If MTV were to morph into something different, I couldnt see it change into something that had nothing to do with music... this is why I think this would work well.

Revival...
There has been brief glimpses of a roller disco revival. Maddona, one of the biggest superstars in the world, featured a roller disco in one of her latest videos.

Maddona 'Sorry'

She also used roller skating and 1980's music for the Intro to her latest world tour.

Madonna Tour Intro

Press/ Newspaper:

In 2005 a movie about Roller Disco called 'Roll Bounce' was released starring rapper Bow Wow.

RollBounce

There is also an event called 'Roller Disco' every Thursday and Friday at 'Canvas', Kings Cross, which is "one of the hottest nights in the capital, impossible to get into after 10pm."

"I just want to recommend Canvas club's Rollerdisco to anyone who wants to have a fun night out away from the usual RnB, hip hop, garage and bashment raves that aren't saying much nowadays. If you want somewhere that's full of good vibes with a friendly atmosphere a rollerdisco is definitely your best option. I went to Canvas for my 21st and we had a really good time. There needs to be more rollerdiscos in London."

Climate Cool.

Use animation to communicate one or
more steps from i count’s ‘Step by Step Guide
for Climate Cool’ book.

The 15 steps to climate cool are:

Feel the power of off
Master your thermostat
Find a jumper you like
Love your fridge
Face your elephant
Dump your dinosaurs
Take sides
Answer back
Reject the ridiculous
Look good
Think
Share stuff
Never stop dreaming
Make noise, be visible
Count

The steps that I am considering to animate are:

Step One: The Power of off (this is my favourite!)
Step Two: Find a jumper you like.
Step Three: Take Sides.

Animation.

I hope to create a piece of motion graphics or animation for this project so I decided to look at animation techneques that I may consider using. One of which is Rotoscoping: a technique in which animators trace over live action movement, frame by frame, for use in animated films. Originally, pre-recorded live-film images were projected onto a frosted glass panel and redrawn by an animator. This projection equipment is called a Rotoscope.

A Scanner Darkly is a 2006 film starring Keanu Reeves, Winona Ryder, Woody Harrelson and Robert Downey, Jr.

The entire movie was filmed digitally using the Panasonic AG-DVX100 and then animated with Rotoshop, a proprietary graphics editing program created by Bob Sabiston.
A Scanner Darkly

Ive always been a fan of Frank Miller and love his style of animation in his comic books, in particular that of Sin City.

Below is a link to a realy cool animation from Good Technology (collaboration with The Daily Telegraph and illustrator Frazer Irving) for the TV campaign for the Audi RS4.

It is a short film a dark and complex story depicting the mysterious nature of the Sinister Beauty proposition: “Beneath”.

Idea 4: MTV at the Movies.

A film festival with different themes each
night, to be held all around the UK.

Idea 3: MTV Motor show.

Idea 2:

MTV Roll: BRING BACK THE ROLLER DISCO!!!
An organised event held all around the UK bringing the roller disco back from the 80's. Could include famouse DJs and artists performing on the night.

I eventually narrowed my selection down to two. These Being the MTV and Climate Cool briefs...

MTV Morphs! - If MTV wasn’t just a broadcaster, what might it be? Your
concept should be based around an object or experience.

Mandatory requirements
Solutions must:
• Embody the spirit of MTV as a brand continuing to
pioneer music and music culture
• Demonstrate what insights have influenced your
‘design’
• Include a criteria for measuring the
success of the concept

Proposition
MTV is a celebration of growing up.

Possible Ideas:
MTV CHILL: With the popularity of winter sports, create an
event that teaches the young at heart how to snowboard and
ski in selected places around the country.

Red Bull:
Present an idea that makes Red Bull engaging to teenagers.

Proposition
Red Bull makes the impossible possible.

Target audience
Teenagers (14-17 year olds) who currently do not
engage with the brand.

Possible Ideas:
Play on the idea that Anything is possible with Red Bull.
Completing a Rubix Cube (making the impossible possible)

Fact: British supermarket chain Morrisons refuses to sell Red Bull to customers under the age of 16. In Finland, some shops only sell 1 canister of the drink at a time to under 18 year olds. Attempting to buy 2 canisters or more requires customers to prove their age, as if they were buying alcoholic beverages.

Climate Cool:

MTV Morphs!:
If MTV wasn’t just a broadcaster, what might it be? Your
concept should be based around an object or experience.

HIV Vaccine:
Create a press campaign alerting parents to take up the opportunity to vaccinate their children against HIV infection.

Proposition:
The best way to prevent infection is to vaccinate people before they are sexually active.

Possible Ideas:
Hard hitting imagery.
Play with letters HIV- His/Her Immune Vaccine

Initial Ideas.

Horror Film Festival:
Create three type-based posters to promote a horror film festival in your nearest city.

City: London.
Type based posters in the classic style of Saul Bass.

Selected External Competition.

When I was given the selected brief pack I found myself in a spot of bother as I couldnt nail down which brief I wanted to do. The briefs that stood out at first were the following:

Advertising: Ikea - Create an advert suitable for viral marketing to Attract new customers and create loyalty amongst Ikea’s young female audience.

Graphic design: Horror Film Festival - Create three type-based posters to promote a horror film festival in your nearest city.

Open Brief: MTV Morphs! - If MTV wasn’t just a broadcaster, what might it be? Your concept should be based around an object or experience.

Animation: 15 step to climate cool - Use animation to communicate one or more steps from i count’s ‘Step by Step Guide for Climate Cool’ book.

Advertising: HIV Vaccine - Create a press campaign alerting parents to take up the opportunity to vaccinate their children against HIV infection.

Open Brief: Red Bull - Present an idea that makes Red Bull engaging to teenagers with the proposition of 'Red Bull makes the impossible possible.'

...as you can see I was quite undecided!!
